ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Babar Awan has said the government is fighting on the two fronts of safeguarding the country from external threats and strengthening democracy.
Expressing his commitment to make the Ministry of Law and Justice ?a law community friendly ministry?, the minister announced Monday to appoint new Attorney General within a week after consultations with the President and the Prime Minister.
The minister was talking to a delegation of Deputy Attorney Generals and the Standing Counsels. He asked them to work hard and consult law books for keeping them abreast of new judgments.
The minister said PPP led democratic government believes in independence of judiciary as it has practically demonstrated by making the courts independent and respecting their judgments in letter and spirit.
?Institutions have been ruined during the more than nine years of dictatorial regime and people are denied access to justice despite spending money?, he said.
He said the parliament, which is the supreme authority has the power to make, amend or abolish laws.
Dr. Babar Awan invited the parliamentary leadership, non-government organizations, Bar Councils and Bar Associations to come forward with their suggestions for legislation on various issues for the general welfare of people.
